TDI – SMEs, Inject some innovation into your company

Research & Development, & Innovation (R&D,&I) is not the sole preserve of the larger companies where there normally exists the aspiration and more importantly, the resources, to actively pursue this key business development area.

Invest NI’s Technical Advisory Unit (TAU) has recognised the need to also focus on the smaller businesses in supporting R&D,&I, and as a result, has introduced the Technical Development Incentive (TDI) scheme. The scheme was developed to assist these smaller enterprises (typically below 20 employees) where there often exists a very low level of R&D,&I activity. It is anticipated that as a result of a company’s engagement with TDI supported technical service providers, both private and public sector, progression to some of the larger Invest NI R&D schemes (e.g. PPD/Compete) may well follow.

Projects between £1,000 and £10,000 will be considered for support. The maximum support level is 40% on project costs up to £5,000 i.e. potential funding of £400 - £2,000 is available. Areas eligible for support include product and process development, technical problem solving, IPR services, technical improvements and product and process quality. Many demands are placed on small businesses and hence a simple process for the application and awarding of grant, underpins the TDI scheme’s operation.
