Boomer Industries Ltd.
Boomer Industries Ltd. was established in 1970. Located in Lisburn Co. Antrim, the company are manufacturers of extruded PVC products with many end uses, including electrical trunking and components of caravans and buses. Boomer also manufactures and sells pre-hung doors.
Boomer Industries Ltd. has grown to become one of the most respected names in the specialist plastics extrusion industry, with customers throughout Europe, the Middle East and North America. Boomer operates to a third party accredited (ISO 14001) Environmental Management System.
The Challenge
Boomer Industries Ltd. has large energy and water consumption rates with relatively high financial costs per annum for these services. The company produces 213.46 tonnes of solid waste each year and raw material costs are also very high.
Envirowise
Boomer Industries Ltd. took part in a locally run Envirowise project called KREEC, a resource efficiency club set up at Invest Northern Ireland’s, Knockmore Hill Industrial Estate. Being part of this resource efficiency club meant that Boomer Industries participated in a Fast Track Advisory visit. The visit reviewed the company’s operations and provided advice on the best course of action to take to deal with areas impacting on the environment. The Envirowise team provided the company with a written report including target figures on waste minimisation.
The Solution
Having reviewed its operations, a number of approaches were identified by Envirowise to assist the company to improve and use resources more efficiently. Envirowise recommends that all businesses should concentrate on the top of the waste hierarchy rule and focus on waste elimination or prevention for all their wastes. The company was advised that it could benefit financially by reducing the amount of waste produced and by introducing new packaging initiatives. Waste monitoring and waste segregation systems were also suggested, with water and energy wastes highlighted.
The Benefits
By implementing the actions advised by Envirowise, Boomer Industries Ltd. will succeed in increasing resource efficiency within its operations. Less packaging will be purchased, lower CO2 emissions will be released and less water, raw materials and packaging will be used by the company.
It is also anticipated that the company could save up to £14,979 per annum as a result of implementing the actions put forward by the Envirowise team.
