First Construction Supply Chain Club
Envirowise is pleased to announce the launch of the very first Construction Supply Chain Club in Northern Ireland. Award winning local contractor GEDA Construction will host the Club, inviting key members of their supply chain to a series of three seminars focusing on waste minimisation and resource efficiency. Both subcontractors and suppliers from the civil engineering and house-building divisions of the company will also avail of Envirowise site visits.
Endorsed by the Construction Employers Federation (CEF) NI and funded by Invest NI, the Club aims to raise awareness of construction waste throughout the supply chain, increase knowledge of waste legislation issues and provide an insight into the Site Waste Management Planning process.
The Host Company
Previously based in Northland Row, Dungannon, GEDA has experienced major growth since it was first established in 1984. In order to accommodate the expanding workforce GEDA relocated to impressive new purpose-built offices in Coalisland in September 2005. Embracing environmental technologies and in line with GEDA’s third party accredited Environmental Management System, the new HQ building incorporated comprehensive energy efficient mechanical and electrical systems into the design, including solar panels for heating, air and water heat pump, recycled rain water and low energy lighting throughout.
Having received the Business in the Community ‘Big Tick’ commendation for Eco-Efficiency in 2007, presented to companies who can display a strategic, comprehensive and innovative approach to reducing waste and natural resource use, GEDA then went on to represent Northern Ireland at the Royal Albert Hall in London in the ‘National Example of Excellence Awards’ and were ‘highly commended’ for their work, against multi-national competition such as Ford Motor Company, Toyota and Boots.
GEDA are excited about the opportunities that hosting the Supply Chain Club will bring to their own organisation and also to members of their supply chain.
Eugene McKenna (Partner) commented on the project:
“Involvement in the Club provides us with an opportunity to communicate more effectively with our sub-contractors and suppliers on environmental issues and to examine in detail, the waste and resource issues at two of our active sites. We hope to gain a greater understanding of the financial and environmental costs of Site Waste Management Planning and work in partnership to achieve the best possible standards”.
Envirowise in Construction
Strong partnership between Envirowise, GEDA and the suppliers will lead to achieving benefits of waste reduction including:
• Reduced purchasing costs for raw materials
• Reduced waste disposal costs
• Potential revenue from recovered materials
• Reduced transport costs
• Less local disruption from lorry movements
• Improved environmental performance eg. material recovery for re-use, more waste diverted from landfill and fewer lorry movements
• Cleaner and safer site conditions
• Better project communication
• Greater understanding of Northern Ireland waste legislation
• Demonstration of a commitment to continuous improvement in sustainable construction (increasingly demanded by potential clients).
The Club will run until the end of March 2008 with updates on progress reported on our website www.envirowise.gov.uk. Download the new Envirowise Guide (GG462), An Introduction to Site Waste Management Plans, giving guidance on resource efficiency, the benefits of site waste management planning and the processes involved.
