“Ciaran Og impressed the judges with the range of projects he has been involved with during the five years he has been in his current role as Energy and Sustainability Officer with the Council,” commented Newry, Mourne and Down District Council Chairperson Councillor Roisin Mulgrew.
And she added: “Ciarán Óg deserves this award as he has displayed enthusiasm and expertise in his area to implement a successful energy management system for the Council, carry out energy efficiency projects which combined have created annual savings of over £86,000 per annum and has promoted energy efficiency awareness both within the Council and to the wider public in the district.” Commented Ciarán Óg: “Just to be there was great, it was a fantastic event, and to win the award makes me very happy and proud. I knew I was up against some really stiff competition. This award is not just for me, but it reflects well on the council as a whole and on the team that works alongside me.”
Janine O’Donnell from sponsors Energia added: “It was great to see so many energy managers taking proactive steps towards energy efficiency, and the council has made some great energy savings, so we are delighted for Ciarán Óg.” One of his first projects was to bring in an energy metering and monitoring system for the top energy user buildings across both Councils and from this Building Managers are able to track their usage of electricity, water, oil and biomass.
From the energy monitoring system Ciaran Óg produces monthly reports on energy usage to Senior management and building managers to create accountability for each manager for their buildings’ energy usage. This has helped many managers identify areas of wastage and to take action to tackle wastage thereby saving money and helping the environment. Presently Ciarán Óg is working alongside the project management team for the new Down Leisure Centre in Downpatrick which is due for completion in early 2018. Current proposals for the centre include Solar Thermal hot water heating for showers, 69 kWp of Solar Photovoltaic panels, a Gas Combined Heat and Power Unit and Air Source Heat Pumps for air and pool water heating.
