Citizen Energy: Electricity grids and markets around the world will shortly change forever

The electrification of transport and increased penetration of intermittent renewable generation sources, such as wind and PV, at forecasted levels will fundamentally challenge our current grid system and its design like never before.

Add to this, the fact that there is little or no visibility at a grid control level of the ebbs and flows of electricity at local distribution level (that’s the level where power is supplied to small businesses and domestic consumers) and you have pretty much a perfect storm of grid stresses.

Fortunately this perfect storm is also a perfect opportunity to construct a new and improved type of grid, one that can accommodate higher levels of intermittent generation and consumption, whilst simultaneously reducing costs and carbon intensity.
