Major changes are on the way for household waste collection in the Republic of Ireland (RoI) with new legislation introducing mandatory Pay by Weight charging to all households from 1st July 2016.
Householders are currently charged in different ways depending on their service provider. Some already pay per kilo, some pay per bin lift, some buy tags and some pay annual or monthly fixed fees. Experience in a number of areas in RoI has shown that where pay by weight charging has been introduced, waste quantities reduce by 20% to 25% almost immediately. It is thought that this is due to better management of food and garden waste (e.g. home composting) as well as better use of bottle banks and civic amenity sites.
